COVID outbreak shuts down Thailand’s CP Foods chicken plant


Thailand’s biggest meat producer has closed one of its chicken processing plants after 245 of its workers were found to have COVID-19, Bangkok Post reported on Sunday (May 30).

The plant in the Kaeng Khoi district has around 5,800 workers and 3,400 had been tested, the newspaper reported citing the province’s governor in a letter to the Interior Ministry on Saturday.

The factory will be closed for five days through June 3 for disinfection.

CP Foods produces a wide range of halal-certified foods, including chicken and chicken products.

It is not known if the plant that has been temporarily shut down processes halal meat.

Thailand is dealing with a fresh COVID surge. New cases hit a high of 5,485 in a  24-hour period reported on Monday (May 31) with a worrying rise of infections among prison populations, according to the Bangkok Post citing official data.
