Eid al Adha livestock markets go online in Oman

Published 12 Jul,2021 via Muscat Daily - The traditional habtas (markets for animals), which are commonplace during Eid al Adha and deal in livestock apart from other commodities, are not taking place this year owing to COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the online platform Tharwa is holding an electronic auction on Tuesday.

As per the Supreme Committee’s decisions, all habta markets and gatherings in the sultanate have been cancelled.

“Tharwa enables consumers and breeders to buy and sell livestock through online bidding in all the governorates,” an official at Tharwa said.

“Bidding starts on July 13 (today) from 6am and lasts till 10pm via www.tharwaoman.om. Livestock will be delivered to the highest bidder at his doorstep.”

Tharwa supports the Omani food industry, livestock owners, breeders and livestock delivery.

“The platform provides a communication channel between suppliers and consumers in the retail sector, as well. It also provides a variety of livestock, such as Omani and Somali goats, lamb and cows, as well as lamb from Sudan, Australia, South Africa, and Turkish goats, among others,” the official added.

The platform enables marketing and supply of domestic and imported meat in the sultanate.
