How much milk does Indonesia consume?
Indonesia's total national milk consumption was 3.8 million tons in 2016, according to data from the ministry of agriculture.
Milk consumption has increased steadily from 2.12 kilograms per capita per year for local cow milk and 9.72 kilograms per capita per year for imported cow milk in 2007 to 3.22 kg/capita/year for local milk and 13.62 kg/capita/year for imported milk in 2016.Â
On the supply side, domestic production of raw milk was 852,000 tons in 2016, equivalent to around 22.34 percent of total consumption.
President Joko Widodo’s government aims to increase domestic milk production to 41 percent of national industrial demand by 2021.
To push local production the government issued new regulations in July this year requiring private sector companies to improve the dairy industry through partnering and empowering small farms and farmers.Â
