Muslim relationship app Muzmatch hits one million users, rejected ‘attractive’ suitors in 2018

Muslim relationship app Muzmatch has hit one million users, thanks to a lady in a remote village in Indonesia, the UK-based start-up’s co-founder Shahzad Younas told Salaam Gateway.

The app was launched in April 2015 and took less than four years to hit the milestone. Younas credits  this achievement to “a huge year of growth” in 2018.

“We accomplished some huge product goals – biggest being a full localisation of the app into thirteen different languages, with the assistance of our Muzmatch community,” said Younas.

While the app continues to boast of bringing together more than 15,000 couples in marriage, Younas revealed the start-up itself has been turning away suitors.

“2018 was the year we turned down some very attractive acquisition offers, too,” Younas said.

Muzmatch will focus on growth by accelerating its product development process.

“[For 2019 Muzmatch will] focus on further polishing the product, making it faster, smoother, and much more feature rich,” said Younas.

“We aim to further double our size and accelerate our growth and focus on international expansion,” he added.

“The goal is always to raise the bar from a technology and app perspective in a way that continually respects the faith and objectives of Muslims looking for a partner.”

Muzmatch raised $1.75 million seed funding in the beginning of 2017 from a mix of Silicon Valley investors, including the famous start-up accelerator Y-Combinator, to which it was accepted into in the summer of the same year.

The start-up will expand its current team of ten employees in London and four abroad, said Younas. “[The team] will grow further in early 2019 with additional hires due to begin.”
