Singapore’s Islamic authority refutes allegations of questionable halal certification practices

The Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) on Saturday (Apr 25) issued a statement refuting allegations made in a media report of questionable practices in the country’s halal certification process.

Hong Kong-based news outlet Asia Sentinel on Apr 22 ran a story making several allegations, including that MUIS showed “favoritism” towards particular foreign halal certification bodies in Australia, Europe and the U.S. and that an official of the authority’s Halal Certification Strategic Unit was currently being investigated for corruption by the state.

Singapore’s biggest local daily The Straits Times reported on Sunday the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau said it would not confirm or deny if any individuals are being investigated for corruption due to confidentiality issues.

MUIS said the allegations in the article are “extremely serious” and it is “looking into the matter and considering taking action against the publishers”.
