UAE launches food security project to train youth to become agriculture entrepreneurs
The United Arab Emirates' Ministry of Climate Change and Environment announced on Monday (June 14) a food security project targeting the country’s youth.
The Youth Food Security Stations will train young people in agricultural systems to become entrepreneurs in animal and crop agriculture, beekeeping, and aquaculture.
The ministry said the project runs in collaboration with the National and Reserve Service Authority, the government body that oversees matters relating to national service, which is compulsory for all male citizens aged between 18 and 30.
The first phase of the project leverages the reserve service recruits to enhance food security and sustainability, said the ministry.

The ministry did not give further details at the time this story was published.
UAE imports up to 90% of its food and has made food security a part of its long-term strategy.
Mariam Almheiri, UAE’s minister for state for food and water security, said in February the government is being flooded with a lot of requests to start growing food in the desert.
UAE’s National Food Security Strategy aims for an increase of 100,000 tons of food items by 2051 and focuses on a “whole-of-nation” approach.
